Couse writes her letter in diary form during the battles of The Wilderness and Spotsylvania. She describes life on the family farm during the battles, mentioning tea with doctors and Union staff officers, looting by soldiers in both armies, nearby troop movements, caring for local refugees, the Federal Army hospitals on their property, and the desolation of the countryside. She mentions war correspondent Edwin Forbes and several generals, particularly Thomas Lafayette Rosser.
